We, at Hawassa university, are proud to announce the promotion of Dr. Tarekegn Yoseph Samago to the rank of Full Professor in Agronomy, in recognition of his distinguished career and outstanding contributions to agricultural research, education, and institutional leadership.
Professor Tarekegn Yoseph Samago is a Professor of Agronomy at the School of Plant and Horticultural Sciences, College of Agriculture, Hawassa University. He has dedicated his academic career to advancing research in crop production, plant nutrition, and sustainable agriculture, with a particular focus on symbiotic nitrogen fixation and the agronomic practices of cereals and legumes - an expertise that has markedly impacted farming communities across Ethiopia.
Professor Tarekegn holds a Doctor Technologiae from Tshwane University of Technology in South Africa (2015), where his doctoral research focused on grain yield, symbiotic nitrogen fixation, carbon assimilation, and phosphorus nutrition of common bean in Ethiopia. He earned his Master of Science in Agronomy from Hawassa University (2011) and a Bachelor of Science in Crop Production and Protection from Jimma University Ambo College (2007).
With over two decades of distinguished service in agronomy, research, and academic leadership, Professor Tarekegn is an internationally recognized expert in plant nutrition, biological nitrogen fixation, agronomy of legumes and cereals, and soil fertility management. He has extensive experience in field-based experimental design, statistical analysis, and applying agronomic practices to enhance crop productivity under diverse environmental conditions. His work has directly contributed to developing agronomic strategies that boost productivity under real-world conditions, bridging the gap between research and practice.

Prof. Tarekegn has been supervising several graduate students and published over 50 scientific articles in reputable international journals. He has contributed to several major research projects, including the CLIFOOD (DAAD Bilateral SDG Graduate School) and the NORAD ICP-V initiative on legumes for food security and environmental sustainability. His technical mastery spans symbiotic nitrogen fixation, carbon assimilation, and nutrient management, and he has led numerous large-scale research initiatives that have shaped national agricultural practices.
In addition to his research, Professor Tarekegn has held significant academic leadership roles, serving as Dean of the College of Agriculture at Hawassa University from 2016 to 2025 and as Plant Science Program Coordinator. He has actively participated in university and community service, including training programs for farmers and agricultural experts.
Professor Tarekegn continues to mentor PhD and MSc students, contribute to national curricula, and provide technical assistance to various agricultural development initiatives. His dedication to Hawassa University, both as a scholar and a servant-leader, makes him truly honored to be considered for the Full Professor Award.
