The College of Medicine and Health Sciences (CMHS) at Hawassa University is hosting its 3rd International Health Research Conference under the theme, "Strengthening Health System Resilience through Translating Evidence into Action" convened on May 14, 2026 at AU Hall, Main campus.
In her welcoming address, Dr. Fitsum Woldegebriel, Chief Executive Director (CED) of the College, expressed her gratitude to the conference partners, presenters and organizers for their dedication to the event's success. She emphasized the critical need for local research and data in Ethiopia noting that policy decisions are usually guided by global data rather than locally generated evidence.
Dr. Ing. Fisiha Getachew, Vice President for Academic Affairs at HU, in his opening remarks stated that research achieves true significance only when translated into evidence that informs policy, action, and knowledge systems. He further underscored that rigorous research is a primary driver of innovation, institutional strengthening, and the improvement of public welfare.

The opening session featured two keynote speeches. Prof. Fantaw Yimer, Director of Research Affairs at HU, underscored that a mere generation of evidence is insufficient, so research must actively inform policy, shape professional practices, and inspire societal progress. Dr. Damene Debalkie, Director General of Sidama Public Health Institute, elaborateed on how addressing both global and local public health challenges fosters innovation and promotes essential collaboration among stakeholders, ultimately benefiting local institutions and the general public.
A key highlight of the conference was a presentation by Dr. Rekiku Fikre, Director for Research and Community Service at CMHS. He shared findings from a recent collaborative study involving Hawassa, Jimma and Ambo universities, which examined the nexus between local health research and policymaking. Dr. Rekiku's presentation identified existing gaps while highlighting opportunities for more effective evidence-based policy integration.
The presentation was followed by a high-level panel discussion moderated by Dr. Dejene Hailu including Dr. Melisew Dejene, Prof. Fantaw Yimer and Dr. Rekiku Fikre, all from Hawassa University. The panel discussion facilitated a robust exchange of views on the complexities of translating research into policy, with active participation from the audience through insightful questions and contributions.
The conference attracted over 210 applications out of which 60 original researchers were selected for presentation both virtually and in person. This international research conference, which will continue for the second day, is a diverse assembly of researchers, policymakers, leaders, practitioners and educators in the sector.
