Ethio-Italy Colloquium on Applied Mathematics at HU

Ethio-Italy Colloquium on Applied Mathematics at Hawassa University.

College of Natural and Computational Sciences, Department of Mathematics, in collaboration with NAASCO project hosted a two-days Ethio-Italy Colloquium on “Mathematics for Ecological Modeling and Infectious Diseases” at Hawassa University on February 8, 2023.

In his opening speech, Dr. Ayano Berasso, President of Hawassa University, pointed out the fact that HU is one of the research universities in the country striving for quality education engaged in advanced level multidisciplinary activities including teaching and learning, conducting problem-solving research, and delivering community services in its catchment areas and beyond. He also stated that the university is massively working on international and national collaborations running 76 international collaborative projects with more than 100 partner institutions and universities. As he additionally noted, such kinds of conferences are quite essential to bring scientists, researchers, academicians, students and practitioners together in the field of applied Mathematics from various national and international universities. It is helpful to share knowledge, experiences, and research findings on developing and implementing mathematical methods.

Dr. Zufan Bedewi, Dean of the College of Natural and Computational Sciences, explained the conference's aim as to bring Italian and Ethiopian researchers from a wider range of backgrounds including mathematics, physics, biology, and engineering together. She added that it presents the opportunity to exchange knowledge and perspectives on the most recent developments in the field. Dr. Zufan remarked that several solutions can be presented to control the emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases in such types of research conferences, and added that it is needless to emphasize that developing countries like Ethiopia are under severe stress due to epidemics of infectious diseases where prevention and controlling of these diseases is a real challenge due to the shortage of knowledge to predict their occurrence.

During these two days, it is expected that many researchers will present diverse papers on the issue from the universities of Naples Federico, Italy, Free State, South Africa, Botswana International University of Science and Technology, Hawassa University, Addis Ababa University, Haramaya University, Adama Science and Technology University, and Hawassa Teachers’ College.
