Aberra Melesse (Professor)

Professor Aberra Melesse Ayenew is by profession an Animal Breeder with special interest in the characterization of indigenous livestock and poultry nutrition. He is married since 1996 and a father of three sons.

He was born in Gondar (Dembia, Jenda Giorgis) on April 4, 1964. He completed his primary education at Jenda Missionary School and his junior and senior education at Atse Fassiledes School located in Gondar city. He joined Awassa Junior Agricultural College of Addis Ababa University in October 1980 and graduated with Diploma in Animal Science and Technology in June 1982. Because of his excellent academic performance, he was recruited by the Addis Ababa University and worked in the position of Technical Assistant for nearly two years at the Dairy Farm of the Awassa Agricultural College.

In August 1984, he won a Scholarship and left for Germany to pursue his education for a Masters degree at Leipzig University and completed his study in Animal Production in March 1990. He was re-employed on May 1990 at Awassa College of at a Lecturer position in the department of Animal Production and Rangeland Management. During this period of time he taught quite a large number of courses both to Diploma and BSc students. Later he was elected as a Head of the Department of General Agriculture were he dedicatedly served for three and half years.

He won a KAAD Scholarship and left for Germany in June 1996 to pursue his PhD study in Animal Breeding at Martin-Luther University of Halle-Wittenberg. He completed his study in December 2000 and was reinstated as Assistant Professor at Debub (now Hawassa) University. He was elected in March 2001 to be Head of the Department of Animal and Range Sciences and served for nearly two years. He was then elected and assigned as Associate Dean of Awassa College of Agriculture in November 2002 and served for three and a half years. He was promoted to Associate Professor in October 2009 and to Professor of Animal Breeding in December 2014 (as accelerated promotion).

Main additional responsibilities, among othersTeam Leader of Animal Breeding and Genetics Module (2010-2013); Chairman of Research and Publication Committee (2010-2013); Chairman of MSc program guideline preparation ad-hoc committee (2011-2012); Team leader and principal investigator of a research project “Phenotypic and genotypic characterization and genetic diversity studies of indigenous farming animals in southern Rift valley of Ethiopia for sustainable livestock development (2007-2013)”; Team leader and principal investigator of “Phenotypic characterization of local chickens found in southern regions of Ethiopia (2003-2007)”; Team Leader of a collaborative and multi disciplinary research project "Resource use systems in the semi arid areas of Southern Shoa, Central Rift Valley of Ethiopia (1993-1996)"; Member of PhD Program Launching Committee, Modular based Curriculum Development Committee and University Journal Launching Committee (2009-2012). Chairman of Academic Standards & Curriculum Standing Committee (2003-2006); Chairman of Scholarship Standing Committee (2002-2005); Member of Academic Commission (2001-2005); Chairman of Staff Recruiting Standing Committee (2003-2005); Member of NORAD Project Implementation Committee (NORPIC, 2001-2005); Major advisor of Master students in animal breeding, animal production and poultry nutrition. Currently he is advising 2 PhD students undertaking their study in Animal Breeding.

International Research Fellowship Awards: won a full fellowship grantfor experienced researchers from Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and conducted his sabbatical based research as Research Guest Scientist at Hohenheim University, Germany (July 2013-November 30, 2014); Won a research fellowship grant from Food Security Centre and conducted his research work as Visiting Scholar at Hohenheim University, Germany (January-July 2010); An elected fellow of DAAD and carried out research as Visiting Researcher at Martin-Luther University, Halle-Saale, Germany (June-August 2007); Visiting Postdoctoral Researcher at Langston University of Oklahoma, USA (September 2003-January 2004).

Research and Publications

His research activities mainly focus on the characterization of the indigenous animal genetic resources of Ethiopia in general and that of southern Ethiopia in particular. Moreover, he has carried out quite a number of researches in the area of poultry nutrition and assessment of unconventional feed resources (mainly on Moringa tree parts) that are suitable both to ruminant and monogastric animals. He has produced two peer reviewed teaching materials titled “Physiology of Animal Adaptations in Stressful Environments, 391 p and Poultry Production and Management in the Tropics, 411 p”. Both teaching materials are useful aids for both BSc and MSc students.

He has produced several publications in peer reviewed international reputable journal and many more mega articles are in the pipeline. During his early professional career, his research activities was very limited due to multiple responsibilities including department head and associate dean of the college (2001-2005) and published only few articles. Thus, almost all of his publications (over 50) appeared since 2009.
