Message from the President of the University

Welcome to the website of Hawassa University. Your interest in our university is most welcomed and very much appreciated. As it is the largest and most comprehensive university in the Southern Nations Nationalities and People's Regional State (SNNPRs) and in the southern part of the country, we offer courses such as Medicine and Health Sciences, Natural and Physical Sciences, Agriculture, Forestry and Natural Resources Management, Law, Business, Humanities and Arts. We are an institution committed to excellence in teaching and an ever-increasing Development Oriented Research.   

The university is located at the center of Great Rift Valley lakes, which is the only geographical feature  of our planet (earth) when visualized from the moon. The center of Great Rift Valley Lakes is famous for its sheer number of birds it harbors. Over 50 percent of all birds have been recorded in the rift valley because of the proximity to numerous aquatic and terrestrial habitats.                                                                                                                                                                                                                    Admasu Tsegaye (PhD)
