Securing Ethiopia’s Future: Institute of Technology Hosts Seminar on Ethiopia's red Quest for Access to the Red Sea

The Institute of Technology (IoT) at Hawassa University hosted a high-level seminar titled "Ethiopia’s Quest for Access to the Red Sea," bringing together leading experts to discuss the nation's strategic, economic, and diplomatic pathways to the coast on March 31, 2026.

Dr. Mihiret Dananto (Scientific Director, IoT) opened the session by outlining the critical economic and security challenges Ethiopia faces as a landlocked nation. He emphasized that a safe, sustainable route to the sea is essential for the planned export-led economy driven by agriculture, minerals, and manufacturing.

Dr. Yacob Arsano, an Associate Professor of political science and international relations at Addis Ababa University and lead Negotiator specializing in Nile water issues and regional cooperation,   delivered a compelling presentation on the historical, legal, and diplomatic backgrounds and justifications for sea access and the potential advantage Eritreans would have if cooperation is in place between the two states and people is in place. He noted that Ethiopia’s prosperity and security is inextricably linked to the Red Sea, advocating for dialogue and regional cooperation between the two states and beyond as the path forward.

Ato Kebede Ganole (Head of Water, Minerals and Energy Bureau, Sidama National Regional State and a PhD candidate in water resources engineering at HU) highlighted how the region’s vast natural resource potential—including energy and minerals—demands direct maritime access to reach global markets efficiently.

The event, moderated by Dr. Gebrechristos Nurye and Dr. Markos Mathewos, was concluded with a vibrant discussion among faculty and students, reinforcing HU's role as a hub for critical national dialogue.
