The different academic units within the institute emerge at different times. It goes back to 1979 the oldest department Agricultural Engineering was established. However the other units came in to existence under the faculty of Technology after three years of the establishment of the university in June 2003. Since then it has gone through fast development increasing in the number and quality of staff members, establishment of different laboratories and equipment as well as in variety of activities engaged.

Institute of Technology is one of the academic units in the Hawassa University which is established substituting the Faculty of Technology as of July 2009. It is one of the re-structuring outcomes through the BPR initiative.
