Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering
Currently, under the department of mechanical and industrial engineering we have two bachelor programs.
- Electromechanical Engineering
- Mechanical Engineering
Based on the market demand, the department will also launch one more undergraduate program (BSc in Industrial Engineering) and two or three graduate programs within a couple of years.
Background of the Department
According to the ten years strategic plan (2004/5-2013/4) of the former Debub University, it was planned to launch a B.Sc program in Mechanical Engineering as of 2005/2006 academic year. To know whether the new program has a relevance to the country’s current market requirement and further development or not, the Institute of Technology (former Technology Faculty) decided to conduct a need assessment study from the major private and public sector. The Institute organized a committee to conduct a survey about the need of both engineering disciplines. The purposes of this need assessment were:
- To assess the level of demand for graduates in the field of Mechanical and Electromechanical Engineering at present and in future.
- To get an indication of desirable curriculum that is helpful to produce technically oriented and highly qualified Mechanical and Electromechanical Engineers with consideration given to specific requirement of the stakeholders.
Besides Mechanical Engineering, from the survey results the need of Electromechanical Engineering has become very promising. Opening of both programs in the field of Mechanical and Electromechanical Engineering is promising at present and in near future. But due to some unanticipated reasons, launching of the department has been delayed for a few years. Finally the department has been established in January 2010 with incorporating Mechanical and Electromechanical Engineering Programs.
Objectives of the Department
The objective of the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Department is to provide broad based educational training in mechanical and electromechanical engineering and its applications leading to a Bachelor of Science Degree. It has also a plan to launch graduate programs in Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering specializations. Its goal is to enable graduates to meet the challenges of the engineering profession in a rapidly changing environment that exists in a developing country like Ethiopia. These challenges require the ability to apply existing knowledge in new ways thereby creating new systems and opportunities as well as adapting existing technology to local production conditions. These require the ability to manage service, maintain and improve upon existing systems.
Vision
“To impart futuristic technical education and instill high patterns of discipline through dedicated staff who shall set global standards, making our students technologically superior and ethically strong, who can develop engineering solution that foster a cleaner, healthier, safer and sustainable quality of life of human race in general and our own people in particular.”
