About us

Being the largest of all the departments in Hawassa University, the Department of Civil and Urban Engineering plays multi-faceted role to enhance best quality academia, to interact with and support industries by offering consultancies and to promote research through practice.  Over eight years of its age, the department has produced 4 batches of Civil Engineering B.Sc. graduates.  The department feels proud for its staff members who are dedicated not only to teach but also to involve in all walks of Civil and Urban engineering related activities like consultancies and trainings.   The department has its own well furnished staff offices, laboratories such as Construction Materials and Highway Engineering, Hydraulics, Soil Mechanics, Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering Software

Staff members of the department are highly motivated to undertake challenges to design efficient buildings, roads and highways, bridges and culverts, reliable water supply systems, environmentally sensitive sewers, and amenity-filled planned communities.

Design consultancy services:  

Architectural, structural, electrical and sanitary design of buildings, stadia, community halls, auditoria, air ports, bridges, foundations, Cost estimation and quantity surveying, Urban water supply and drainage systems, urban sanitation systems, Geometric and structural design of highway pavements, Urban planning and design All types of surveying works

• Soil classification test by Atterbergs limits tests - Liquid limit test-Plastic limit test
• Soil classification test by sieving,
• Organic content test on sand,
• Silt and clay content test on sand,
• Bulking characteristics test of sand,
• Specific gravity/unit weight test on sand,
• Screen analysis on sand,
• Specific gravity/unit weight test on Coarse aggregate,
• Flakiness Index test on Coarse aggregate,
• Slump cone test on fresh concrete,
• Compaction factor test on fresh concrete,
• Concrete mix design, Rapid Analysis of Mix,

Training Services: 

The department could accept and offer short term trainings in any of the areas of Civil and Urban Engineering for any target group.  Programs can be designed upon request, based on the requirement and discussion with the clients, within a desired time.

Projects and Clients

The department’s consultancy wing has its clients of different sorts such as governmental and non-governmental agencies, contractors and developers.  Over the past 8 years, the department has provided many design solutions for its clients, out of which the design of stadium in Dilla is the recent one, client being the sports commission of Dilla.  Consultancy wing actively conducted and reported to the Ministry of Eduation, for the site selection of new University at Agere Mariam town.  The department undertook material testing, non-destructive testing of concrete and concrete mix design jobs also for many of its clients. Water quality testing is another usual testing consultancy that quit often being done.
