Hawassa University Hosted International Conference

Hawassa University, Academic center of Excellence For Human Nutrition, hosted an international conference by the theme “Partnership for effective Food and Nutrition Training and Sustainable Development’’ from 15-18/2018.


Mr. Ayano Beraso, president of Hawassa University delivered welcoming speech to participants and said that Hawassa University is striving in all its capacity to cater for the wide range of development, need of the government and the surrounding communities. He also noted due to the wider involvement in multilateral development issues and its strong research and community service tradition, the university is being selected to be the center of excellence on different fields of study .According to the president, among the center of excellences, the academic center of excellence for human nutrition is the major and also the first higher education institution in Ethiopia that started human nutrition academic programs. And currently the center runs first, second and third degree programs in human nutrition and food science and post harvest technology.



 While addressing the issue of human nutrition and food science Mr. Fekadu Reta, Director of the academic center of excellence for human nutrition, briefed that the Human Nutrition program was started in 2005 and the program is chosen as National Center of Excellence for Human Nutrition after winning a competitive grant among all Ethiopian Universities that teach Human Nutrition academic program. 

Mr. Fekadu added that to meet the objective and overcome the said problems, the center has engaged extensively in producing qualified man power in human nutrition, food science and post harvest technology. Beside the actual teaching and learning activity the center conducts scientific researches on food and nutrition and hosts national and international conferences in collaboration with different organizations and institutions

In the conference more than 200 individuals from different national and international universities, organizations and institution were participated in the conference and 20 research papers were presented by scholars and researchers and effective discussion was made by participants. On the final remark Mr. Ayano urged all stakeholders, partners and participants to further strength the capacity of the academic center through training , man power and problem solving research so as to eradicate the problem of poverty in general and human nutrition in particular from both rural and urban communities in Ethiopia.
