The first International Conference on Urbanization, Governance and Social transformation in Africa held at HU

The first International Conference on Urbanization, Governance and Social transformation in Africa was held at Hawassa University African Union Hall last December 15,2017. Hosted by Hawassa University Center for Policy and Development Research (CPDR) and Department of Urban and Regional Planning, IoT, the conference brought various cutting edge researchers and policy makers from Ethiopia and abroad.

In the opening speech Ato Ayano Beraso, President of the University, said that Ethiopian government has developed five years ambitious Growth and Transformation plan the output of which inevitably is transforming huge proportion of the current rural residents into urban dwellers, and hence the University is working to its level best to contribute towards handling urbanization with informed and scientifically equipped leadership. In line with this, the President added, Hawassa University is working in all the three pillars: teaching and learning, Research and Technology transfer as well Community services on the area. In teaching learning HU is currently enrolling the second batch of students in Urban and Regional Planning, in research especially the CPDR is working with various Government and Non Government bodies to conduct researches in crucial areas of the topic and through community service various training s and capacity building activities are being given to the urban dwellers so that they can become productive citizens contributing to flourishing urban life. Ato Ayano finally stated that conducting such international workshop on Urbanization, Governance and Social transformation in Africa will serve as both outreach service to bring international and our University expertise on urbanization as well as learning opportunity to the HU community from cutting edge expertise globally.
