Hawassa University held its 38th Annual Research Conference

May 18 - 20 / 2017 marked an important time for Hawassa University research community as the University held its 38th Annual Research Conference at African Union Hall in presence of its Board Chair, University leadership, distinguished scientists invited and its researchers.

Dr. Tesfaye Abebe, Vice President for Research and Technology Transfer of HU, in his welcoming remark pointed that the University research activities kept rising in volume as well as influence so far. He also outlined the various engagements in areas of research, community service and technology transfer the University conducted through funds from the regular budget as well as from collaborative projects.

In his opening speech H.E. Ato Million Mathewos, Board chair for HU, praised HU for its excellent work in expansion, research and more as well as challenged that the research findings should immediately be translated into interventions and the working  jointly among the senior Professors and the junior faculty in the University needs to strengthen.

Distinguished keynote speakers including Prof. Masresha Fetene of Ethiopian Academy of Science, Prof. Yemane Berhane of Addis Continental School of Public Health and Dr. Getnet Alemaw of Ethiopian Agricultural Research Council shared expert opinions and rich experiences in trends of education and research in the nation, passion plus success stories in expanding graduate training and research in health in Ethiopia and more.

Dr. Alemayehu Regassa, Director for Research Programs Directorate - HU, also gave a detailed trends in research practices of the University, success, challenges and the way forward. In this he described that the number of researches supported by collaborative projects right now is over 38 as some already ongoing ones are yet to join the list. All of these projects are mobilizing from few thousands to multimillion money as well as supporting the University in human plus material capacity building.

The director also mentioned that the number of researches, only those supported by the regular budget, and the funds allocated for them rose from 53 & 398,000.00 in 2001 E.C. to 131 & 7,748,610.00 in 2009 E.C. the peak number of researches being 206 in 2008 E.C. causing some drop this year as some of the researches became thematic ones clustering many in one.

In the three days engagements 115 research papers were presented and each of the presentations were followed by hot academic discussions which indeed were enlightening for all around.
