Hawassa University delegates visit University of Hohenheim

March 07 – 10, 2017 a huge delegation from Hawassa University (HU) led by the University President Ayano Beraso visited University of Hohenheim (UHOH), Germany, for a kick-off workshop of the DAAD-funded bilateral SDG graduate school “Climate Change Effects on Food Security” (CLIFOOD) at the University of Hohenheim / Food Security Center (FSC).

As the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), the world’s time-bound and quantified targets for addressing extreme poverty in its many dimensions, come to conclusion by the end of 2015 the new global agenda that calls on countries to begin efforts to achieve 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) till 2030 ushered in. The “Climate Change Effects on Food Security” (CLIFOOD) – SDG graduate School is also a part of the contribution towards this global move from the academia specifically contributing to the SDGs: 1, 2, 3, 4, 13 & 15.

As per the project objectives 6 PhD candidates will be trained in south-south and another 6 in the south-south collaboration, some post doc positions will be supported and various capacity building activities will be realized during the project phase of 2017 – 2020.

The University of Hohenheim kick-off workshop included: official meeting between President Ayano Beraso Hula, HU, and President Prof. Dr. Stephan Dabbert, UHOH, welcome speech by Prof. Dr. Andreas Pyka, Vice-President for Internationalization, UHOH, Prof. Dr. Ralf Vögele, Dean of Faculty of Agriculture, UHOH and Dr. Simone Höckele-Häfner, Deputy Director Department of International Affairs, Development Cooperation, Protocol, Head of Division Development Cooperation, Africa, State Ministry Baden-Württemberg, briefing on the concept of Bilateral SDG Graduate Schools and their contribution to the Agenda 2030 by Lars Gerold, Head of Section ‘Development Cooperation – Institution Building in Higher Education’ - DAAD, opening remarks by the Scientific leaders of the project on both sides Prof. Dr. Hans K. Biesalski, Director Food Security Center, University of Hohenheim and Dr. Tesfaye Abebe, Vice President for Research and Technology Transfer, general introduction to the project by UHOH / FSC CEOs; Dr. Jenny Kopsch-Xhema & Dr. Nicole Schönleber, presentation on profile of Hawassa University with special focus on its international collaborations by Atkilt Esaiyas, Corporate Communications Director – HU and presentations by Scientists from both Universities on specific sub-themes concerned among others, https://www.7visuals.com/kunden/UHOH_FSC_SDGKickOff2017/fullres.

It was learnt that HU delegates in addition to the project kick-off widely interacted with their partners at UHOH and some managed to find research grants to their graduate students where the thesis work will be jointly supervised by Professors at both Universities.

It is to be recalled that another team from UHOH / FSC visited HU recently, http://www.hu.edu.et/hu/index.php/component/k2/item/385-hohenheim-university-delegates-visited-hawassa-university.html, and in few months time it is planned that the CLIFOOD core team from UHOH will make an official visit to HU after all the PhD candidates have been selected and other baseline activities related to the project have been pushed forwards.
