Hawassa University STEM center starting Science Shared Campus program

Hawassa University Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Center organized a panel discussion on May 20/05/2016 at main campus on starting Science Shared Campus program which empowers the young generation in science and technology areas and innovation.

Dr. Alemayehu Gebreegziabhair, Country director of STEM center, said that the STEM center works on practical and theoretical teaching process for capacity building of elementary and high school students on the streams specified.

He also added that, in line with the policy of the government to enroll 70% of the nation’s University students, the STEM centers are working towards education quality and motivating students on innovation and to guide and help according to their interests.

University President, Prof. Yosef Mamo, Vice-presidents, Directors, Hawassa City Education Bureau guests and invited people participated in the panel discussion.

According to the briefing selected Secondary School students will get enrolled at Hawassa University for their Biology, Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics under close supervision by a Professor from the University and the other classes at their respective Secondary School near the University. Experiences both abroad and at Kotebe University College in Addis Ababa show brilliant high school students who received such mentorship at their early days performed much higher and contributed to the few elites of the science in the long run.

The panel discussion was largely focused on the significance of launching the program, contents of the curriculum at the country level, eligibility of the program, number of students’ intake, and preparation of adequate resources to successfully implement the programs.

Science Shared Campus program will start at Hawassa University in the coming Ethiopian New Year.
