Hawassa University moving to expand its Partnership with Nanjing University

Three delegates of Nanjing Agricultural University (NAU) had a three days official visit to HU.

The delegates were here with a view to establish collaboration with HU college of Agriculture particularly and to expand this collaboration to other fields of studies.

On the visit, International Relations office head of NAU and Hu Communication office made presentation about their respective universities. A fruitful discussion was also made by representatives of both universities.

The delegates had big seminar @ HU College of agriculture, school of Animal sciences and also made campus tour and visited HU Chinese language class rooms.

As part of the final discussion, it is declared that an MOU will be signed between the two institutes and different collaborative activities will take place as soon as possible.

International Conference on Aquatic Resources and Aquaculture for Sustainable Development

International Conference on Aquatic Resources and Aquaculture for Sustainable Development held from January 10- 13/2019, President of HU Mr.Ayano Baraso made an opening speech by briefing the overall facts and figures of HU. He said that, HU strives for quality education and it is nationally selected to be centre of excellence on different fields of study such as Forester, Nutrition and food science, teacher education and educational leadership and entrepreneurship.


 The president added that, since developing nations of the world including Ethiopia is under severe stress of food insecurity; having nine major rivers and 19 resourceful lakes. The country is endowed with inland waters cover a total surface area of 8,800sq.km. In which most of the larger lakes are found in the Great Rift Valley, The country has an estimated fish production potential of more than 51,000tones. Compare to exports, currently fish imports grown more than threefold and such international conference plays a vital role in showing the road map to new alternative, viable and successful technologies the president underlined.       

Dean, College of Natural and Computational Sciences, HU, Dr.Zeyitu Gashaw gave special address on the conference said that, though agriculture is the main food production sector in developing nation, due to several constraints there is need to find additional sectors to enhance the production in which fish and aquaculture is proved to be the best option. Aquatic environment is extensive and provides various opportunities to increase food production besides    generating much more income and employment. According to the Dean this is why the college organized this international conference


Head, Department of Biology ,HU, Dr,Zufan Bedewi said on her part that the department initiated this international conference believing that it will bring out options and suggestions for the improvement of aquaculture production and help the country to reduce import of fish thereby saving foreign exchange and providing the unemployed youth an opportunity to find better livelihoods.


On the conference eighty known scientists and researchers on fish and aquatic resources from Africa, Asia, Europe and USA have participated and about 51 research papers were presented
