What is the theme and history behind why we celebrate?

The event first started to campaign for better pay and rights for women, but is now aimed at inspiring females across the world - here's the meaning of Women's Day and origin behind it.

It is a global celebration which aims to inspire women in countries across the world.

This year International Women's Day falls on Thursday, March 8.

The tradition began with the first National Women's Day in 1909 and its roots are in campaigning for better pay and voting rights.

Today, events will take place across the world to celebrate the achievements of women and hopefully inspire others with the theme "A strong call to #PressforProgress. A strong call to motivate and unite friends, colleagues and whole communities to think, act and be gender inclusive."

In Ethiopia the day will be celebrated for the 42nd time. Hawassa University will celebrate the day colorfully on the coming Wednesday, March 14 2018.

In the 23rd of January 2018, the Senate Executive Committee (SEC) has approved the recommendations to establish its first ever research institute– Institute of Policy and Development Research (IPDR).

The founding of the Institute followed a detailed study which critically examined broad range of issues in addition to the current performance and future prospects of the Center for Policy and Development Research (CPDR). Most importantly, the elevation of CPDR, which was inaugurated in 2015,to the status of a full-fill-aged research institute has been decided in accordance with the broader institutional vision becoming one of the top ranking HEIs in Africa. Thus, IPDR envisages strong focus on research that galvanizes PhD training to bolster both institutional research capacity and national human resource needs by undertaking, need-based high quality policy and development research.
