President’s message

Greetings from the vibrant and escalating Hawassa University (HU) located at the heart of Hawassa City, Capital of the Southern Nations Nationalities and Peoples Regional State in the Great Rift Valley!

I have known Hawassa University as a city resident, city mayor, instructor at College of Business and Economics, vice-president and recently president and I believe I can witness the booming development of the institution from an insider’s perspective. Established in 2000 G.C. as Debub University by a merger of three independent Colleges; Awassa College of Agriculture, Wondo Genet College of Forestry, Dilla College of Teacher Education and Health Sciences we have a very humble beginning with only 18 undergraduate programs and few thousand students. In about 16 years however, thanks to the government commitment, devoted faculty and staff, excellent students, supportive local / national & international community we managed to be ranked the best University in Ethiopia in 2015/16 academic year among the senior Universities of the nation.

Currently, with a total of over 36,000 Students and over 7,000 Faculty plus Staff we are running over 70 undergraduate and over 90 graduate programs including PhD and medical residency trainings in our one Institute and eight Colleges: Institute of Technology, Colleges of Agriculture, Business and Economics, Education & Training, Forestry and Natural Resource Management, Law and Governance, Medicine & Health Sciences, Natural and computational Sciences, Social Sciences and Humanities. We also run a huge comprehensive specialized hospital serving over 18 million people in the nearby regions, a teaching hotel, a Center for Policy Development and Research (CPDR), a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Center, recently a University Enterprise to make ourselves and our services more accessible with flexibility of a business firm and many more. In addition to our satellite campuses, research centers and temporary offices we run six campuses: four in town, one at Wondo Genet, one at Awada – Yirgalem and the seventh at Daye we expect to get functional by 2017/18 academic year.

The driving force behind all this is our vision which is stated as “We aspire to be the most preferred University in the nation, competitive in Africa & renowned in the world by 2020”. Mobilizing all the resources the government generously allocates as well as partners avail we are investing billions of Birr per anum in advancing knowledge, enhancing technology generation and transfer, promoting effective entrepreneurship, and inculcating a responsible and democratic attitude through quality and relevant education, research, and community services; thereby, contributing towards the achievement of the University’s and national vision.

This is then to Welcome you in a very special way, whether you are prospective national / international student, Faculty / Staff at another University or Research Center thinking of partnering with HU eminent Professors, Industry or Social Agent, one of our over 40,000 alumni or any other colleague!

Only in joining hands we succeeded so far and believe will achieve higher in the future!

Why not then, drop at one of our campuses and pay a brief visit, take a pic in one of our green campuses and share with your contacts, use one of our facilities for your future needs, like us on FB, follow us on tweeter, visit our web regularly or drop us few words at our University email This email address is being protected from spambots.
