The Department of Language studies is one of the fast growing and Expanding academic departments in Hawassa University. The department will be reconstituted as a School with new naming, may be, School of Language, Communication and Cultural Studies when the two programmes, Journalism and Mass Communication for undergraduate programme and Teaching English as Foreign Language (TEFL) for post graduate programme, which will be started in September 2011. The Department of Language Studies was established in 2001 as The Department of Foreign Language and Literature under the faculty of Social Sciences. Before its establishment as a department , it had been serving As English Unit under the faculty of Basic sciences and had been offering service courses such as College English II College English II, and Sophomore English.
After its establishment, it has been admitting undergraduate program students in both teaching and non-teaching streams. The students in the non-teaching stream take courses such as Linguistics, Literature, Journalism and Mass Communication ,Public Relations and other supportive and common courses, and the students in the teaching stream correspondingly take Linguistics, Literature, English skills Development and Education courses along with other supportive and common courses. So far, the Department had graduated seven batches of student with Bachelor Arts degree in Foreign Language and Literature and one batch with Bachelor of Education degree in English Language teaching.
The department is currently named as the Department of Language Studies (DLS), and is working to realize its vision expanding its program both in undergraduate and graduate Studies. Accordingly, it has launched two new programs one undergraduate and another postgraduate which will admit students as of 2011 academic year.
- B.A in Journalism and Mass Communication,
- MA in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL)
The department is also planning to launch another MA programs. The programmes to be launched and under curriculum review are
- Postgraduate in Cultural and Multilingual Studies(two specializations)

Advertising and Public Relations
Development and political Communication
M.A programmes in Cultural and Multilingual Studies, and Journalism and Mass Communication are hoped to be launched in the second semester of 2011/1012 academic year.
