University of Kordofan

The University of Kordofan (informally Kordofan University) founded in 1990, is one of the largest universities in Sudan located in Elobied 560 Km to the southwest of Khartoum. It comprises 9 faculties (Faculty of Natural Resources & Environmental Studies, Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Public Health, Faculty of Commerce & Business Administration, Faculty of Art, Faculty Science, Faculty of Engineering & Technical Studies, Faculty Statistics & Computer Sciences and Faculty of Education) and two research centres (Gum Arabic Research Centre and Peace Studies Research Centre) distributed and organized in four campuses (Central, Medical, Tagat and Educational campuses). The Faculty of Natural Resources and Environmental Studies was the first institution to be established and was initially hosted for several years at the premises of Elobeid Research Station. The faculty mandate gives special emphasis for natural resources and environmental studies which makes it unique in the way of tackling agricultural sciences (crops & livestock, forestry & range sciences) and was chosen as model faculty among its counterparts in Sudan. The Faculty accomodates eight departments (Animal Production, Crop Sciences, Plant Protection, Biochemistry & Food Sciences, Forestry & range Sciences, Agricultural Economics & Rural Development, Soil & Water Sciences and Rural Extension & Social Development). It offers a three years technical diploma and a 5 years B.Sc. (Honors) in addition to postgraduate certificates at M.Sc. & Ph.D. levels. The number of students presently accommodated in the faculty exceeds 2000 students supervised by 87 academic staff (3 professors, 16 associate professors, 27 assistant professors 40 lecturers and 1 teaching assistant), 17.6% of them are females. The faculty is a member of different scientific and research programs and is undertaking several academic and research projects in collaboration with DAAD, CIRAD, RUFORUM and ANAFE.

Elobeid Research Station

Elobeid Research Station was established in 1984 through a fund jointly provided by USAID and the World Bank to serve the small scale farmers dominating the traditional rain fed sector of North Kordofan State under Western Sudan Agricultural Research Project (WSARP). The station was integrated to ARC since 1988 with the same research mandate. The main campus accommodates staff houses; offices; Laboratories (Agronomy, animal science, soil and water, and plant protection); Regional tree seed center; Regional gene bank; Main library; Conference hall; Computer hall; Senior guest house; Nurseries; and Research farm. Acacia senegal experimental forest and horticultural research farm are located several kilometers away from the main campus. Seven research programs namely Crop improvement and genetic enhancement; Soil and water;Range and livestock; Gum Arabic; Forestry; Integrated Pest and Disease Management; and Socio-economic and technology transfer are presently functional under the supervision of 22 research scientists. Constraints and research problems were identified by diagnostic surveys carried out in 1983 and updated in 2008. Farming systems research approach is followed to give holistic solutions to constraints facing the traditional farmers through multi-disciplinary research teams. The station is also undertaking several research and development projects in partnership with international funding agencies and NGOs. The station has long history of collaboration with higher education institutions. It has fully hosted University of Kordofan at its early stages and donated more than 200 hectares for its establishment. The existing collaboration at levels of undergraduate, graduate, and scientific committees with University of Kordofan and other universities in the country can be described as fairly adequate.
