Background
Law School of Hawassa University was established in 2003. For the first time it began Law Diploma program by enrolling 102 students. In 2004 it commenced LL.B program in regular and evening programs. Since it establishment, the School has been striving to achieve the mandates of the University in general and the School in particular, which is producing qualified and skilled manpower to complement the millennium development goals of the Country and provision of appropriate legal professions, community services and conducting problem solving researches.
Vision
Hawassa University law School seeks to be a distinctive and distinguished national school with a strong international and comparative focus. We aspire to be a nationally and internationally recognized center of scholarly excellence. We are committed to producing outstanding and innovative scholarship and to providing an environment that advances scholarly discussion and debate. To this end, we will show unwavering commitment to support our University's intellectual goals. At the same time, the Law School will encourage its faculty to maintain its commitment to excellent teaching. It will support programs, initiatives and innovations that will serve to further enhance the faculty's performance as teachers.
Mission
The mission of Hawassa university law school is to (1) provide its students with a diverse, intellectually rigorous learning environment in which they acquire knowledge of the law in its broad international, intercultural, and interdisciplinary contexts so that they may acquire the professional skills and ethical grounding to become excellent lawyers and leaders in their communities and chosen professions; (2) to promote knowledge and understanding of the law by providing its faculty with the resources and intellectual environment to excel in teaching and scholarship; (3) to ensure that all members of its law school community have the opportunity, and are encouraged, to provide service to the profession and to the local, national, and international community; (4) to create a community, committed to excellence, honesty, openness, diversity and collegiality; and (5) to support and advance through our teaching, scholarship, and service an institutional commitment to justice, equality, the highest ethical standards and a system based upon the rule of law. Conducting problem solving multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary researches.
Goals
- To advance knowledge through legal research;
- To facilitate access to justice for poor communities;
- To build public opinion regarding legal issues and even be a discordant voice in social dialogue;
- To disseminate knowledge to the community on legal matters;
- To be involved in the law-making process; and
- To provide continuing legal education.
