HU CA Conference

Background

Agriculture is the backbone of Ethiopia's economy on which the livelihood of the majority of the population is heavily relied. Ethiopia is currently undergoing rapid economic growth and transformation, with improvements in education, health and infrastructure development. Despite this fact, significant portion of the population is still food insecure, malnourished and live below poverty line. Land degradation, climate change, population pressure and low use of improved technologies are among the many underpinning factors that contribute to the low productivity and production of crop and livestock systems.

To narrow down these gaps research has been underway over the last many decades. These researches have been conducted in national and regional research systems, higher learning institutions, international research centers. College of Agriculture of Hawassa University is one of the higher learning institutions in Ethiopia working towards excellence in academic, research and community outreach programs in the area of Agriculture. To this end, the college strives to share knowledge, information, and create networking among the scientific community and various stakeholders through conferences and professional meetings.

Therefore, this national conference under the theme Agriculture, Natural Resources and Climate Change will serve as a platform to discus on the major potentials, constraints and opportunities of Ethiopian agriculture, current issues in natural resources and climate change. The conference also helps to disseminate and share innovative research outputs and technologies and also serve as a forum for linkage and creation of partnership among the multiple actors.

The objectives of the conference are to:

  • discuss on current issues of land degradation, climate change and food security
  • assess the current crop breeding and technological strategies in the face of climate change
  • assess nutrition sensitive agriculture and its role for sustainable development
  • disseminate and document innovative technologies, knowledges and skills
  • create linkage and networking among researchers and potential partners
