Hawassa University Embarks on Phase IV Expansion Projects

In a bid to match the high expectations and the ever-rising profile of Hawassa University, as one of the best institutes of higher learning in Ethiopia, expansion projects worth about 254 million Ethiopian Birr have been commenced at the four campuses of the University. 

According to officials of the University, the recent stages of constructions are in line with the Phase IV Master Plan of the University aimed at providing conducive and aesthetic environment for the pursuance of academic and social activities in the institution.

After a rigorous competition, two consultants Zeleke Belay Consulting Architects Plc. and Bet Consulting Architects were chosen to design the earmarked projects. With the design completed, two contractors MIDROC Construction and JVRAMA and CHINA Jiangsu companies emerged after an open bid selection process.

The projects to be undertaken by MIDROC construction are estimated at 164 Million Ethiopian Birr which include:

  • An Auditorium at the main campus,   
  • A four-storey office building at the main campus,
  • A one-storey student's cafeteria at the main campus,
  • A one-storey staff cafeteria at the three campuses,
  • A two storey classroom block at Wondo Genet.                                                                                                         Staff Office  

Midroc-Construction as part of the bargain has also the responsibility of the Master Plan Development. On the other hand, the project to be undertaken by JVRAMA and CHINA jiangsu Company are estimated at 90 million Ethiopian Birr. They include:

  • Students' and sport complexes at the main campus,
  • Laboratories at the main campus and  Referral Hospita,
  • Libraries at the main campus and ACA,
  • Staff residence at the Referral Hospital.

The duration for these projects is 30 months effective October, 2007.
