About us
History and Background
Hawassa University (HU) was established in Hawassa on the 25th of April 2000, by merging three colleges in Hawassa, Southern Ethiopia: Hawassa College of Agriculture (also known as Awassa College of Agriculture), Wondo Genet College of Forestry and Natural Resources, and Dilla College of Teachers Education & Health Sciences (DCTEHS). The Hawassa College of Agriculture served as the nucleus of HU and initiated three other faculties, namely, Faculty of Natural Sciences, Faculty of Technology and Faculty of Social Sciences.
Dilla College of Teachers Education and Health Sciences became an autonomous university in 2006. Currently HU has three colleges, 11 faculties and 46 departments altogether. The Hawassa University was also known as Debub University from 2000 to 2006.
