Message from the President of the University

Welcome to the website of Hawassa University. Your interest in our university is most welcomed and very much appreciated. As it is the largest and most comprehensive university in the Southern Nations Nationalities and People's Regional State (SNNPRs) and in the southern part of the country, we offer courses such as Medicine and Health Sciences, Natural and Physical Sciences, Agriculture, Forestry and Natural Resources Management, Law, Business, Humanities and Arts. We are an institution committed to excellence in teaching and an ever-increasing Development Oriented Research.   

The university is located at the center of Great Rift Valley lakes, which is the only geographical feature  of our planet (earth) when visualized from the moon. The center of Great Rift Valley Lakes is famous for its sheer number of birds it harbors. Over 50 percent of all birds have been recorded in the rift valley because of the proximity to numerous aquatic and terrestrial habitats.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                 Admasu Tsegaye (PhD)

The SNNPRs where the university is located is multi-ethnic state often known as a mosaic of language and culture, with over 56 ethno-linguistic groups living together patiently. They are more than half of the nations and nationalities in the country. The region is also one of the most ecologically diverse area in Africa. Its primary forests are famous for their coffee, which is well known as the cradle of the Arabica species. A number of lakes, geothermal energy, and endemic species of birds, animals and plants inhabit in the region. The aforementioned unique feature of the area gives the unique opportunity for teaching, research and the formation of national and international partnership.

The climate in which the university operate in our country is changing drastically. They are given an increasing responsibility in advancing the national knowledge economy, innovative enterprises and international competitiveness. At present Ethiopian higher education and training institutions are increasingly required to be at the fore front of the development and poverty alleviation efforts of the country. Althoughthe country has started to register continous economic growth in the last five years, these developments need to be sustainable. This promising effort increasingly sends a strong message for increased production of skilled and highly competent trained and relevant human capital. Our university, therefore, has reponsibility to contributing to the achievement of economic progress, political stability and peace. Thus, here in the country in particular; internationally in general, we welcome all concerned and interested partners to join and endeavour with us as we believe influences from diverse areas can enrich design solutions.
